Freiburg is one of the southernmost German cities in the southwestern part of Baden-Württemberg and Germany. It is crossed by the Dreisam river and lies at the foot of the Black Forest mountains. The city center is about 20 km from the Rhine and France.
The old town of Freiburg is famous for its cathedral and its "bächle", small open gutters that line the sidewalks. Their total length is 15.5 km. It welcomes more than three million visitors per year. Freiburg is also the seat of a university founded in 1457. Finally, it is a pioneer city in terms of ecology, with the Vauban eco-neighborhood developed since 1996.
